The Pasión Latina is the exotic, raven-haired cousin of the Sidecar and the Margarita, and they all belong to the family of cocktails known as the sour. And it certainly is an extensive family. In fact, it's more like a whole continent than just one family. See, a sour is usually defined as any combination of a base liquor, lemon or lime juice and a sweetener. (At least, that's how Jerry Thomas laid it out in his influential cocktail tome How to Mix Drinks, published in 1862, the same year that the BACARDI® company was founded.) But that pretty much describes half the cocktails in existence. So, if the Pasión Latina doesn't even have lemon or lime juice in it, how can you call it a sour? Because you're forgetting what cocktails are all about: breaking the rules... |
