Invented in 1944 by Trader Vic at his Polynesian-themed restaurant of the same name in San Francisco. While a friend of his was visiting from Tahiti, Vic offered him the as yet unnamed cocktail. The man tasted the cocktail, beamed with pleasure and exclaimed “Mai Tai!” When Vic asked him what that means, he said “Out of this world!” This masterpiece was first unveiled on August 15th 1954 at the Beachcomber Bar at The Caribe Hilton, San Juan, Puerto Rico. After months of trial and error, legendary bartender Ramon "Monchito" Marrero revealed his new cocktail, the Piña Colada.
